DDE Pilot Case

The Pilot Case is situated in the electronics Industry, which is dominated by highly automated production systems in clean rooms. The industry is characterized by high volume production, but currently there is a trend towards lower production volumes to enable more customized electronic products.

Dresden Elektronik assembles printed circuit boards for many customers for over 20 years. They are specialists for small batch sizes and long running products. Their customers can order even 15 year old designs and they accept batch sizes of less than 10 pieces. As an Electronic Manufacturing Services (EMS) company, DDE has to compete in open-bids with other companies. Ever more major EMS companies extend their markets towards the smaller volumes creating enormous pressure on smaller EMS companies to reduce cost and increase productivity.

Although today’s electronic assembly processes use already a lot of machinery for all kinds of assembly and soldering still not all required tasks can be solved efficiently. The manufacturing of many printed circuit boards (PCBs) involves a skilled worker with years of soldering expertise to execute none-automatable tasks. High volume electronic products allow for high priced automation solutions but today’s market requirements tend to ever more customized solutions leading to ever more decreasing batch sizes and ever more increasing flexibility. This combination makes a flexible AND effective manufacturing department the key feature for market success.

In this context the utilization of robots integrating with the worker into a shared work flow would be an extremely interesting solution to shorten the manufacturing time while simultaneously raising the quality.
