FISCHER Pilot Case

The FISCHER pilot case deals with the assembly of the roof rack, which is done manually using stamped parts. It involves several assembly stations and operations, as well as additional material picking and quality inspection activities. It is very representative for the production environment and automation problems encountered at automotive supplier sites.

As a 1st and 2nd tier supplier, FISCHER has to compete in open-bids with other companies regarding contracts for the supply of modules. Usually, those contracts include a mandatory annual reduction of cost by 5-10 %, which the supplier has to meet. As such FISCHER and other suppliers are under enormous pressure to reduce cost and increase productivities to meet the demands of OEMs.

Furthermore, FISCHER has a work force of about 190 employees distributed throughout various engineering and production sites. As most of those employees have been with the company since its foundation in 1985 the average employee’s age lies above 45 years. FISCHER is looking for ways to enable its experienced employees to stay at the same level of productivity as younger employees, as to leverage their experience and knowledge.

As an SME FISCHER does not have expert robot programmers in his employment. Also, because of the short-term durations of the contracts and the changing products to be supplied Fischer cannot purchase dedicated automation solutions, which would become useless for the next contract.

FISCHER is in need of a flexible robot solution which does not require expert knowledge and can be adapted – taught new applications – without much effort.
