OPEL Pilot Case

The Pilot Case is situated in the automotive Industry, which is characterized by high volume production. However with an exponentially high number of variants and customization options, it has a very SME-like production environment.

The pilot case deals with the assembly of entry-elbow and is representative of 50% of all assembly operations at OPEL. As such it is used as the standard benchmark for evaluating automation attempts.

It covers a mixture of common kind operations with a reasonable level of difficulty in dexterity (character recognition, part assembling).

The assembly operation includes very typical ergonomically critical actions like the two-hand mounting of a 4-5 kg part (holding with one hand and screwing with the other). Although these operations are formally ranked as ergonomically feasible actions, they cause strain and are often executed inappropriately which may contribute to long-term problems for the human body. Moreover the pilot case has to deal with different variants of the product (including different geometries).
